Ezra pauses for a moment - and maybe that's enough by itself to tell Kanan that there's more behind the cupcakes than just a teenage boy eating junk food just because he can. Two birthdays just isn't really enough to get used to telling people what day it is, even if he's determined to do what he can to enjoy the day, divorcing it from the connotations back home.
But... it's Kanan asking. His mentor and teacher, the man he looks up to the most. He wants Kanan to know about the milestones in his life.
Even if he's awkwardly unsure just how to go about saying it. He fiddles with one of the pieces of fruit as he searches for the words.
"Well, it's... From when I'm from, it's been... I mean... I'm seventeen?"
He darts a quick look at Kanan, not entirely sure how he'll respond to that. The last birthday Kanan had been around for (from Ezra's perspective), they'd been a little busy with other things, even if Ezra hadn't been in a rotten mood.
