[ When Kanan wakes, he will find that his crystal is glowing! His emotion drops for the month of Ennea have resonated with Empatheias' giant crystal, and a reaction has been formed.

By his feet is a singing bass! Except it does not sing and it talks and comments on anything Kanan does. It's a very sarcastic fish. On occasion, when Kanan is happy, the fish will begin to smell like the ocean.

[Kanan will receive a handwritten note someone can read to him ("This entitles you to one sandwich from a restaurant on me. - Finn") and a small box containing this bracelet.]

[Space person though Kanan may be, that doesn't exclude him from Leia giving gifts to those she cares for. The trouble is Kanan's likes and dislikes, what he needs, Leia doesn't know those too well.

So, from Leia, he receives a box of pastries and other desserts, as well as a bag of coffee beans. She knows, at least, that Jedi house has more tea than anyone could possibly need, and that coffee is probably a welcome treat for Kanan.]

It almost could have been a day like any other day. Just like last year, there's no fanfare in the streets, no troopers mixing with people to help encourage celebrations, no announcements on the holonet, nothing. It's nice. Nice enough that Ezra's almost afraid to say anything to make the day feel different.

And yet...

And yet, it was nice last year, too, when he got to do little things to make it special. A day off with Hera, cake in a cafe with Leia... He doesn't need anything big. But just... something. Something to make the day his.

So, breakfast that morning is a little bit different. He's got a bowl full of nothing but fruit - all kinds of fruit, bought with his own money - that he's happily munching through when Kanan gets up. On the table next to him is a box of cupcakes, each with the words "happy birthday" written in icing on them. From Leia, of course. She's the only one still here who'd know when his birthday is.

It's definitely a different tone of happiness for him. Happiness tinged with the memory of too many birthdays passed in decided unhappiness. And maybe happiness with a hint of melancholy because Hera isn't here for this one. But still. He wants to be happy today. Kanan showing up just gives him a reason to smile.

It's his birthday, and maybe not all his family is here, but some of them are. He's not alone.

"Hey, Kanan," he greets contentedly, nudging the box so Kanan can hear it scrape on the table. He's getting used to giving little clues like that now. "Want a cupcake?"

Yes, he's willing to share.

Ezra pauses for a moment - and maybe that's enough by itself to tell Kanan that there's more behind the cupcakes than just a teenage boy eating junk food just because he can. Two birthdays just isn't really enough to get used to telling people what day it is, even if he's determined to do what he can to enjoy the day, divorcing it from the connotations back home.

But... it's Kanan asking. His mentor and teacher, the man he looks up to the most. He wants Kanan to know about the milestones in his life.

Even if he's awkwardly unsure just how to go about saying it. He fiddles with one of the pieces of fruit as he searches for the words.

"Well, it's... From when I'm from, it's been... I mean... I'm seventeen?"

He darts a quick look at Kanan, not entirely sure how he'll respond to that. The last birthday Kanan had been around for (from Ezra's perspective), they'd been a little busy with other things, even if Ezra hadn't been in a rotten mood.

As simple as that. Ezra lets out a breath he hadn't realized he'd been holding. Of course Kanan wouldn't make a big deal out of it. He knew. He understood what this day was for Ezra. Just a simple acknowledgment, and a question of what Ezra wanted. What more could Ezra ask for than that?

"I don't know." He really hadn't given it much thought. He remembers birthdays as a little kid, but he feels too old for the kinds of things he did as a kid, and...

...and maybe those memories are still a little too sore, because the last of those birthdays had been the one where his parents had been taken away. His throat aches for a moment before he swallows it back. A good day. It's supposed to be a good day today. His parents would want that, he's sure.

"Last year I ditched work and just went out with Hera to watch some airship races. I'm open to other ideas, though."

It's been so long since Ezra saw any of them. The ache of missing them is always there, sharper when he lets himself think about them. He'd even be glad to see Chopper, he thinks, though of course he'd rather see Hera, Sabine, or Zeb.

But at least he's got Kanan. That goes a long way to help dull the ache.

"They're a lot slower than what we're used to," he warns. "But it's still kind of fun to watch them.

Wanna go after breakfast? I don't know what you had planned for today."

My plans pretty much already involved you.

Probably training, or missions, or both, Ezra knows, but there's still something nice about that to hear. The air around him warms with appreciation, and maybe even smells a little nicer, something like baked apples and space waffles - smells he associates with the two places he'd ever called home before coming here.

"We can probably still do some of the things you wanted to do, too. I don't mind." That being said, though, he pushes his bowl over - again letting it scrape on the table for Kanan's ears - to offer him some of the piled-high fruit. Breakfast first, and then they can get started with just spending time together.

The best gift he feels like he could ever get.
